Modern Warfare 4 is heading into launch week with a familiar question hanging over it: is this the Call of Duty your squad should buy now, or one worth watching from the sidelines? The release date is confirmed, campaign early access has begun, and there is an important subscription detail Xbox players should understand before making plans.

This is FGO’s pre-launch guide, based on official Call of Duty announcements checked October 17, 2026. It is not a hands-on review, a performance test, or a verdict on the finished game.

The dates that matter

MilestoneConfirmed dateWhat it means
Campaign early accessOctober 16, 2026Available to eligible digital preorders and prepurchases.
DMZ early accessOctober 20, 2026A separate early-access start; it is not live as of this article’s check.
Full launchOctober 23, 2026The scheduled release of Modern Warfare 4.

The official campaign update confirms that Standard Digital and Vault Edition purchases qualify for campaign early access. Physical-copy buyers should not assume the same benefit. Actual access can depend on platform availability, time zones, and outages, so check your storefront before scheduling a session.

Where you can play

Infinity Ward leads development, with the announced platform lineup covering PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC, plus Nintendo Switch 2. See the official multiplayer briefing for the development and platform details.

That list matters more than a familiar franchise logo. Before paying, make sure you are buying for the hardware and account you actually use. A listing for one platform is not a promise that your purchase includes every other version.

Game Pass players: budget for a separate purchase

Call of Duty’s October 15 standalone-release announcement says Modern Warfare 4 will not be included with Game Pass at launch and points to Holiday 2027 for subscription availability. Players who want to join on October 23 need to purchase the game separately.

FGO’s take: check this before asking your whole squad to download it. An active subscription should not be mistaken for ownership of the new release. Compare the actual checkout total and edition contents rather than making a decision around the early-access countdown alone.

The campaign’s setup, without the spoilers

The official outline follows a South Korean squad confronting an invasion on the Korean Peninsula while Captain Price pursues the person behind the conflict. Activision describes sixteen missions, with locations including Paris, New York and Mumbai.

A premise can create interest, but it does not establish pacing, mission variety, or a satisfying ending. Those are questions for finished-game coverage. If campaign quality is your main reason to buy, look for spoiler-light assessments that explain what works instead of only repeating the trailer’s biggest moments.

Multiplayer: what we are watching

One announced addition is Kill Block, a modular battleground that changes configurations. The official briefing describes 3v3 Gunfight and Gunfight 10v10 support at launch. The main product page also promotes a revised aiming, handling and audio system.

Those are developer descriptions, not FGO test results. Our questions are practical: can players read the action clearly, learn the changing spaces, and understand why they lost an engagement? A feature list cannot settle those questions. Neither can it tell us how stable matchmaking and online play will be under launch traffic.

Before you preorder

  • Choose the experience first. Campaign, multiplayer and DMZ may matter differently to you. Buy for what you expect to play.
  • Check the edition. Separate playable content from cosmetic extras and future-season items.
  • Check your platform’s requirements. Confirm storage, PC requirements where applicable, online-play conditions and refund rules on the actual store.
  • Agree on a squad plan. Make sure everyone understands the purchase requirement and which mode you are joining.

The FGO takeaway

Modern Warfare 4 has a clear launch schedule and enough confirmed information to start planning. Whether it earns your money depends on the experience you want and how the released game delivers. Early access is an option, not a deadline for making a good decision.
